If you happen to have a boat, a GB bender would make a swell boat anchor. They're 45 degrees with the handle straight up, which drives me nuts.

Old rolls of romex come in handy when some of your new work must appear "old" for one reason or another. (shh)

Couple of years ago on my way home from work I saw a garage sale and stopped in. Just happened to be a retired electrician that was moving. Picked up a 1" and a 1 1/4" bender both with handles for 3 bucks each. What a great deal.:)

I cant bend 1 1/4, so I guess it would make a pretty cool paper weight for me...

I got a smokin deal on some threading equipment today at a flea market, a Ridged 300 powerhead, an adjustable die head that goes up to 2", and a power reamer that sits on a tri-pod (it has a cone shaped reamer and a progressive series of wire brushes that spin for different sized conduits) and a couple of other accessories that go with it for $125.00

Thats a shame, how come the resale is so bad?

mdshunk
08-02-2008, 07:24 PM
Thats a shame, how come the resale is so bad?A couple reasons, I think. Heavy stuff doesn't sell for much on eBay, due to shipping charges, so you're auctioning mostly to people willing to drive to pick it up. The pool of potential people who need such a gadget is also small. If I had it to do over, I might have held onto them and just asked around at the supply house to see if anyone wanted to buy one or both. I wrestled with this idea in the first place, but I didn't really want to enrich someone in my local market with cheap trade tools they otherwise might not be able to afford new. The way it turned out anyhow, one went to a large plumbing contractor pretty far to my north, and one went to a two-man sprinkler fitter in my area.

the power brush thing is a Ridged 124, I have never seen one before, but it comes with the lot. actually, I have been keeping my eyes open for a pony threader, but I figgured I better not pass this deal up.

yeah, i hate GB benders too, but for $5...... they will probably sit on the shelf and never get opened....

The wire was THHN, not romex. have zero use for the 14 and the 12 was really old on a metal spool. its going in the next trip to the scrap yard. ill get about 40 for it.

I don't want to sound to pessimistic here, but does anyone have anything good to say about GB? A garage sale is a good place for their products IMSO:roll:

I certainly don't. The only products from GB that I've used are their wirenuts and hand benders, and I don't like either one of them.

IMO there is more to choosing an item then picking the most costly item.

There are the low end items that are simply junk.

Then there are the products priced in the middle where the price actually represents the worth of an item.

Then there are the high end items that yes, are good but not really much better then the middle priced items and you end up paying just for the name.

Names like Bose, Nike, Snap-On, Greenlee, and Fluke all come to mind. (Yes I own Fluke, either they have been bought for me or I have gotten them used.)

Agreed 100-2%. GreenLee????? I don't have much to say about their product either. To heck with Bose, Nikes are generic, Snap-On is on top and maybe over-priced, and Fluke is,...........well, I am entitled to my own opinion and experiences. I have my faith in Fluke, I like Megger/Biddle products as well.

You forgot Botox Clint:grin:

Without a doubt your entitled. :)

And I don't think I have ever said a bad word about Fluke products other then the price. That said I am sure there are other meters out there that are as good as Fluke for 1/2 the price.

I was impressed when I sent my 87 out for repair, they quoted me $90 to fix. It came back cleaned, calibrated and working along with a check back to me. They charged me less then what they quoted.

Nope, not unless the company offers to buy me a new meter and my work expands to troubleshooting VFDs on a regular basis.

I can think of a lot of other things to spend $300 -$400 on.

After listening to a lot of great advice and experience here at the forum I would like an insulation tester to use on a regular basis so I could become proficient at it.

Why did I pick the Fluke?

It is one of the few that has been recommend here as an entry level unit.

Why don't you go with the 1587? It has the low-pass feature for working with drives, but it doesn't have the PI/DAR function, the Compare feature, or the low-ohms function.
