What's the deal with the miniature lamps in new fixtures? Seems like most of the ceiling fans and light fixtures that we have installed lately have the mini bulbs. Is this another government conspiracy, like the CFL's?

Part of that energy savings act thing they passed a while back. Most of the requirements don't take legal effect for years, but the product has been showing up that way already for months and months now.

I would like to know what the energy savings is between a 60w medium base (E26) vs. 60w Candelabra base (E12). I mean 60w is 60w no matter the size of delivery. its a bunch of foolishness as far as Im concerned.

It does prevent over lamping.

and less debris in the landfills since they are a smaller bulb

I think it's just as simple as they prevent overlamping, and thus, prevent energy waste. Some of them are shipping with PL type lampholders now too.

I found the real reason,

EPACT prohibits manufacture or import after January 1, 2007, of ceiling fans or lighting kits that do not include bulbs. The bulbs must be of the new compact fluorescent type. the bill allows the use of incandescent bulbs if the fixture uses candelabra sockets. So , to get out of supplying cfls , all the fan guys just changed the lampholder. politics at its best

CFL's rock but I HATE all the new crap they come up with every year.

That's as good a reason as any. Gotta love them loopholes.;)

The loophole should be closed by now. I saw candelabra cfl's at the depot the other day. I imagine shipping a candelabra cfl would cost far more than a standard base cfl.

I had some customer supplied fans the other day that had LED lights in them. These are not dimmable, and of course my electricians had roughed in the fans figuring a fan/light dimmer control. Had to change the switch boxes to 2 gangs. From now on we're wiring all ceiling fans with 2 gang switch boxes, esp since the dimmable CFLs don't work particularly well.
