I'm using AutoCAD 2007 with Microvellum running over top of that. I wouldn't recommend splurging on Microvellum unless part of your business includes making custom cabinetry. :D8-)

It really comes down to how much you want to spend on the software, the training, and what exactly you want to do. If you're running a prominent CAD program, you can usually get the DWG, DXF or other associated files from an Architect or Engineer. However, you'll have some down time trying to figure out how to use any CAD software.

The major CAD programs are:
AutoCAD
Microstation
DrawBASE
and to a lesser extent
SoftPlan

i work in autocad myself, but there is another reasonably priced
program that will read and write files in autocad format... it is
called designcad 3d max, and it is about $75 bucks, if memory serves.

We use Microstation XM. Expensive but worth it, very intuitive, lots electrically specific add ons, 3D which is great for laying out mechanical / electrical rooms. Depends on what you want to spend and what you want it to do for you (load calculations, conductor sizing, lighting calcs, etc.... or just draw lines) there are some out there for much less. The difference between Revit, Autocad & Microstation is kind of like the debate over Chevy,Dodge and Ford, They are all good, mostly it's personal preference.
