Hey guys with the temp starting to rise im wondering if you guys provide water kegs on your trucks? Do you buy them once a year? Or do you just break out the old ones? The reason I ask is I mentioned to my partner we might need to get one. He said the boss wouldnt provide one since in the past they hadent been taken care of. Now I could understand this maybe in better times but were down to small 5 man company. Most of these guys have 2plus years with the owner. Im the least tenured guy and I have 7 monthes. Is my boss being cheap or would you feel the same.

when I worked for other EC's I always brought my own water. Who wants to drink out of a dirty, bacteria ridden water jug. That probably never gets properly washed out. And once they start adding sugary powders to them they are pretty much done.

OSHA regs require drinking water provided on the job site or (in the truck)

We normaly buy our mega drinks in the morning, then again at lunch time. However, this year will be a killer for me as Im boycott'n gatorade, since its a pepsi product.......

Oh I'm not saying I wouldn't provide them I just personally would rather drink my own water........I'm a big boy now, I dont need my "daddy" getting my water for me. And I can go to the bathroom all by myself too.......;) I personally stay away from sugary drinks, they will cause your men to get the mid day slump, especially after lunch on a hot day. I would love to see if any one's ever done a study on how much productivity slumps after lunch time, especially if your men are drinking red bulls, monster, Gatorade(yes Gatorade, its filled with sugars, so is vitamin water). Unless your doing some really strenuous work outs in warm/hot weather you really dont need that much Gatorade to replenish your electrolytes. Gatorade was created for football players. so unless your doing wind sprints all day a gallon of Gatorade is a little over kill for you. I swear if I didnt know any better it seems like every drink out on the market is hell bent on turning everyone who drinks this garbage into diabetics.

I hear ya Tony I can do the same even wipe my a$$. I was just wondering if my boss is really as cheap as I think he is and it looks like he might be. Ill typically freeze gatoraide and have it all day but with this economy ive got to save money every possible way. Um raman noodles

If you're working hard Gatorade is good for you. Your body can use the carbs and salts in it if you're actually working. If your not doing much then it really doesn't help you.

I dont know maybe its the way I was raised. But I am so sick of those guys that complain all day of what their bossed arent providing for them. Ive been there. Ive seen guys abuse equipment, water bulls, etc and when the thing finally breaks or get "lost" they complain like a bunch of little kids and want "daddy" to get a new one.
And I am far from cheap when it comes to providing equipment and you would see that if you look in my truck. But when guys dont take care of stuff that really gets my goat.

I'm not stating that its "not" good for you, but you really dont need to drink it all day. It becomes counter productive for some people with slower metabolisms

I buy a gallon of water and freeze it for a couple of hours till it is partly frozen. That way water is always cold and you don't have to bother with ice

I have heard alot of things bosses should provide, but hydration shouldn't be one of them. Your boss only has thee obligation to pay for you to work. Your hydration is your own *ss, I mean butt. I am not into community coolers.

Should your boss provide food as well? Freeze some water or whatever it is you want and get your tail out there and bust some ***.

I freeze half of a 1/2gal jug overnight, then fill it up in the AM from the gallons I buy.

state labor laws REQUIRE drinking water to be provided. so does osha.
and a first aid kit.
and PPE
and MSDS safety sheets

i bring my own water, but it's the law that it be provided. and a container
to hold it in. and it has to be within a certain temperature range.

I trust the water jug that I bring myself, and clean daily.

From what I observe of some people's hygiene, I will continue to provide my own.

Well that's not entirely true. He's also obligated to provide drinking water.

In one of our safety meetings we covered the dangers of heat stroke and heat exhaustion, proper hydration is key to prevention along with other steps .As an owner I feel I have an obligation to provide a "safe" enviroment for the men who are in my employ.Providing the means for hydration is part of making the workplace safe.
One of the reasons I went to botteled water was sanitation.

What really got my goat was when I was a 2nd or 3rd yr don't remember which.....I was on a job with just me and a j-man digging in 100+degree heat for most of the summer. We had a 5 gallon jug that I kept good and iced up filled up and cleaned properly every day. (Because that's one of many things a good apprentice does.:D) One day we decided we were a bit tired of water so he told the parts runner to bring out a few of those gatorade packs that they normally kept in the shop and guys would grab them for the jugs on their service vans. The owner found out about that and actually took the price of the gatorade and then some out of the j-man's check the next week. It was a whole political game where the guys that were career service runners seemed on a pedestal above those of us on jobs most of the time. One of many reasons I don't work there anymore.

A good water jug-cooler will last for years. They do need to be sanitized on a regular basis. A bag of ice isnt that expensive and paper cups are cheap. I hate when the guys complain about the jug water and want bottled water. I tried the bottled water but found to many bottles with a mouthful of water gone being thrown away.

Yeah me too, It's called electrical tape, but don't use the Super 33, that stuff isn't cheap. :D

I bring my own drinks to work, just like I bring my own lunch.

Just when I thought I knew all the gripes, company provided drinking water comes up! And it's an OSHA reg. too!

I guess I don't get it, I figured a guy that could pack his own lunch could bring his own drink, but maybe not?

I hate when the guys complain about the jug water and want bottled water.

What a bunch of babies..... Next complaint: Where's the company provided truck-mount refrigerator?

I was turned away from the "communal" water jug when I seen a group of nasty drywallers open the top to their water jug, dunk their hands in it, then pour a drink from the bottom. Made me wonder what happens to our water jug when no one is looking

Not saying all drywallers are nasty :) but this particular group was

I've been cursing them since the day I started in this trade. I think most all of us have at least at some point.

Buy smaller bottles. I found that bottled water cut down on 'trips" to the water cooler the guys just grab a bottle and go back to their work area. I don't over stock the cooler so waste is minimal when thier are no bottles left its amazing how fast they find thier half full bottle.

A possible issue with water bottles is that some people are incapable of using a trash can.

First boss told me their are only two can'ts , if you can't do it you can't stay. people who are incapable of using a trash can don't work for me.
