WBE, MBE

A general contractor that I have worked with for some time is always telling how I should get the WBE/MBE cert.

I’ve looked around on the internet, I’d qualify, but is it really worth all the documentation?

Does being certified WBE/MBE really open doors? Or am I just reading somebody else’s marketing on the internet.

Anybody that has done this WBE/MBE care to share?

Should a pay a lawyer or try to do the paperwork my self?

Also, I live in a large city, and I’d like to get set up on the vender list’s of all the different departments(think schools, college’s, public transportation, police, fire, highway………ect). Any thoughts on how to get the applications/paperwork done?

With all the time involved it looks like this could be an expensive undertaking, It could take months to get all the paperwork filled out, trips to all the different departments, stand in line here, make an appointment there. Perhaps I should look to hire somebody who worked in HR?

Then what’s with the DBE, how’s all that work? What is it?

Womens Business Enterprises, Minority Business Enterprizes, and Disabled Business Enterprizes, it has to do with a company giving these types of businesses a chance to bid and participate on projects.

I know many of my clients try to get 30% of their contractors to be WBE/MBE. They even award to higher bids, just to satisfy their corporations goals.

The company I work for is a WBE. Over the last two years in the public works sector I have seen projects requiring more DBE & SBE. Even then it is only a goal not a requirement. The GC just has to show a good faith effort. This can be calling us and asking if we are bidding project xxx. Once they have done that they earned X amount of points toward the requirement. It's a joke as far as I am concerned because low bid still gets the job.

Do the corporations get a tax credit is they meet the percentage goal of WBE/MBE contractors?

I'm not sure about the tax credits, but they get to meet some made up corparate goals.
