I'm trying to find, and probably overlooked, requirements and distances that allow an meterbase to be installed near a natural gas meter. This install is residential, and the customer wants the meterbase moved from the back of the house, where they are going to add a room, to around the side of the house where the gas meter is located. Thanks

In VA. The meter alone would not pose a problem. But if there's an ocpd, the distance would be 10 feet from the gas meter (if the gas meter vents to atmosphere) most do, and if it doesn't vent to atmosphere, the nearest OCPD can be 3 feet. These are gas regs, not NEC. Son no vent, 3 feet, vent 10 feet to ocpd.

What MAC said. Call your gas co. and they will let you know what's up.

Here, 10" from a corner and window to the center of the meter. 24' from where the gas comes into the house counting the gas meter. On the other side of the gas meter it is 10" from the center of the meter.
Of corse specs very, and your requirements may be different, get a book or go online to your local POCO or gas co.

Around here, the local electrical utility (POCO) has its own regulations. I believe most utilities provide electrical regulations on service equipment. Here in Alliant Energy's territory (a local utility for WI) they state 3' clearance from the gas relief valve of the gas meter to the electrical meter. My advice, obtain the reg's of the local utility, or talk to the local engineer. POCO's engineer's are usually pretty good to get info on clearance issues. I have both sets of reg's on my truck AND the utility company's engineers on my phone's contacts. Above & beyond the NEC, I believe...(but don't quote me:grin:)

I believe it's not so much a gas utility issue as it a local POCO issue.

Here its 3 feet from a gas meter but there is a utility regulation where all utilities must be within 3 feet of the service entrance (CATV, Phone) so that they can be on the common bond. However, the gas is not to be bonded.

Service upgrade jobs depend a lot on what you got to play with, so around here poco don't get to picky on that. I've had them withing 3' from gas meter before.

Around here the power company will send out a planner and tell us where the meter can be relocated. I would talk to them first before I installed it
