I was told this is acceptable I say not, any input here?

I doubt it would work for long, but check the ballast and see what it is designed to use.

The only time I've seen a MH bulb and ballast mismatched, both the bulbs and the ballasts were damaged.

It's just the fixture manufacturer OPINION as to what lamp will work. The guy on the job surely knows better.

George Stolz asked this same question a couple weeks ago....

I'd think if the 75 watt ballast was meant to drive a 100 watt lamp it'd say so right on the side of it....
