fire alarm wiring

We're installing fire alarm cables in a very old college dorm building. When the cables are run in a drop ceiling or other semi open area (i.e. not through framing members) is there a max distance between supports? I can't find that in the NEC. Is it in a fire alarm code?

I believe that all low volt cable need to be supported every 4 feet

Unfortunately there is no code for fire alarm wiring supports above 7' that I know of. Many AHJ's use their own judgement.
