could anyone tell me a good way to check out a general contractors background? for example paying electrical subcontractors? I am just starting off as an EC and I am looking to stay clear of subcontracting for deadbeats.

Checking the D&B for the duns score is about the only thing I know.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a D&B and where can I find this info? thanks much for your input.

Dunn and Bradstreet. It is like the credit bureau for businesses. If you have been in business any amount of time, you will have a D&B Paydex score and a duns number (like a social security number for your business), even if you are unaware that they exist.

Talk To Your Supply House They Know Everyone, Check With Any Plumber Buddies, Or Other Contractors In The Area. If This G.c Has Burnt Anyone Word Will Get Around Real Fast.

What about asking for credit references? You are extending credit, right?

Aside from what my other colleagues have already posted I would suggest that you start off small with a new contractor. Do a few small jobs and get to know him/her. If you start to get that warm fuzzy feeling and he becomes your CWPF (close, warm, personal friend) you can start doing more work. If he's slow paying or beats you up front on a small job then you only lost a few $$. Personally speaking, I don't trust any of them. Even my CWPF's.

I'd talk to his other subs. Plumber, painter, drywaller, etc. They will usually tell you exactly how he is to work for. I wouldn't necessarily be concerned with what his last EC says, as he'd be a little biased.

Certainly have him sign a contract or at least a proposal laying out job cost and payment terms.
