Just for your Info--- It looks like a good idea
Carlon has introduced a new box for use in shallow walls (furred out block walls 1/1/2” thick) . It looks like a shallow 2 gang retrofit box but the second half is about Ύ” shallower than the rest of the box. This part slips in behind the sheetrock. Here is a picture of the box without the cover on the section that goes behind the sheetrock.

Interestingly enough an electrical contractor brought that box into the local electrical supply this morning. I said where’s the cover and he said it doesn’t come with a cover. I said it isn’t legal without a cover, it must have one. He said the EI said as long as it said UL it was Okay. I said no it ain’t. Fortunately, the supply house had internet access. I found the PDF file and showed him the box with the cover. I bet the Home Depot crew, where he bought the box, threw the covers out not knowing what they were.

Here is the link--- go to page 6 (8 of 22). The part # is B117RSW

Myself and another inspector were asking why hasn't anyone made this to date? They have! Different.

I hope they make one that is the standard depth also. Sometimes you get a situation with 12/3 wire and a few 12/2's it would be nice to get the job down legally.

I said the same thing after looking at your pic...LOL.

Did you notice this:
•†B117RSW
† Not UL Classified for Fire Resistance

All the device boxes seem to have the † notation ...but not the round boxes(although the "old work" has it)?

What does that mean?

I did NOT look at every single box....

I don't know-- maybe you can't use these boxes in a firewall?????

That makes perfect sense ....and I probably unwittingly answered it myself (although the "old work" has it)

Thank you for translating my own reply Stickboy...LOL.

you are correct it has a cover which easily snaps in and out for ease of wiring. The one in the picture is missing however hd started carrying these boxes last month.

You may in fact use an old work box in a fire rated wall, it must be rigidly mounted though.

Joe it is not in the NEC, it will be a building code violation.

A fire rated wall is assembly of components put together per a testing labs criteria.

The info can be found in the UL Book for fire rating.

The short story is the only way to install an electrical box in a fire rated wall (and maintain the fire rating) is to have box secured to the studs, it can not be solely supported by the drywall.
