View Full Version : Gang?

Had a job late last week where the HO's boyfriend stood next to me all day long to ask 300 questions. <I hate it when that happens>
I think I got 299 of them right but the one that stumped me was the origin of the word "gang" as in 1-gang, 2 gang, etc.
Got me wondering myself, so I tried google with no luck.
Any oldtimers here who would care to enlighten me? Thanks in advance.

I believe the term came to be with the metal switch boxes. They were made so that they could be "ganged" together" or joined together. One definition of "gang" is "band together"

I think it comes from 'Gangable'.
As in a gangable device box.
Do a Google search for Gangable.

Wow....thanks for the quick responses this early Sunday AM.
I can't believe I didn't come up with this on my own! Feeling rather stupid at the moment.
Is there any kind of award given for the dumbest question ever?
Thanks again,
Jeff

'Our Gang' came on the scene about the same time as electrical boxes. The analogy is so obvious, I can't believe you missed it. Think back to the old Spanky and Alfalfa switches of old, and it becomes more clear.

Reminds me of a joke (this is better spoken that read):
Q: Why does Buckwheat wash his clothes in Tide?
A: Because it's too cold out-tide! Ba-da-boom!

I hate it too... However, I agree with quogueelectric
Labor rate 75 per hr straight labor, 100 per hr you watching, 150 per hr you helping.

Funny, I actually thought about that when the boyfriend showed up and became my shadow, but I had already bid the job. Luckly, for me, we found a couple of extra's that needed tending to.
That picture sure brings back memories. Used to watch that when I came home from 2nd grade or so. That cute little blond in the middle must be about 60 now. I wonder what she looks like?
