Helping out the town with some part time electrical inspections. The regular inspector was on vacation. Asked to cover for him. 3 to 4 a day for a week.
I went to bill the building dept. $25 per and the building inspector said too much! he will pay $15 a hour. and should be 1/2 each. The regular inspector
is my 30 year mentor and friend. so i did not make a fuss. btw, this is Wayland Massacusetts. You do the math.

Do you mean 1/2 an hour each? Does that include travel?

Sounds to me like you really are helping out the town.

Personally, I think the $25.00 was low.

There would be no fuss, I just would not do it.

$7.50 per stop, after taxes you can't even buy McDonalds value meal.

Interesting way to put into perspective. If you can't even buy a value meal, it's definitely not worth it. :D

This seems to be a trend. Considering the amount of responsibility, liability, and the vehicle/travel investment involved, there seems to be quite a wage disparity.

It is a matter of public record in many areas what the building inspectors make. In my area, if the inspector was married with 3 kids, he could quilify for certain welfare assistance.

I think I would have asked what the job pays before doing the work.

Yes but in those areas, just like Sacramento the cost of living is also much much higher, which negates any increase in pay.

Florida has many towns where inspectors make less than $20/hr.
There are some pretty good benefits attached however.
One of the towns next to me was paying $18.29/hr and you supplied your own vehicle with an allowance.
Friend was offered the job, he thought they were kidding about the pay. (Remember that one Eric?)

One County around here also only pays for 35 hr/wk. That way you are a part-time employee and the benefit package changes, if any.
