To expand on another post. How about a confession of what it would take to bring your home up to 2008NEC?
Mine needs:
TR GFCIs
TR duplexes
AFCIs--I have MWBCs
Rear yard ext GFCI & WWIU cover on 2
Stairs 3way
Smoke/COs are installed but not interwired.
20A bath cct
My grounding system & surge suppression system are way above NEC requirements. I also have a LOT of additional dedicated ccts.

Or the things we've 'allowed' ourselves to get away with... ;)
I'll go first.
In the home I sold Oct '06 there were a few violations I let myself get away with during a remodel. The work was done in 1992.
Buried a J-box. (ser to the stove needed to be re-routed)
Panel on block wall not moved forward to be flush with new gwb.
Ran a GP circuit to the attic for L&R using the chimney chase.
Put keyless lights in 3 closets.
Jerry rigged the kitchen sink drain and chewed through some joists to tiein with the new work and used it as the vent all into too small for it pipe.
Re-piped all the gas & water; new framing; new electric with no permits or inspections.
Come on guys, fess up!

Mine needs tires.
Seriously, I built mine about 4 years ago and still need a couple cover plates, a recep, doorbell and my smokies have already failed and been pulled out leaving the pigtail dangling.
I DID finish the outside GFCI's and lighting a few months ago.

If I took all my fished wires out of the chase alongside my chimney, I'd have no phone, cable, or a/c receptacle wiring to the 2nd floor. Where's the violation?

My house, built 10 years ago, I did the wiring:
Air conditioning outside unit - connected with thhn, no flex
Air conditioning attic unit - same as above
Several outside receptacles still not installed
Some outside receptacles not GFCI
Miscelaneous J-box covers not installed in attic
No Tamper-resistant anywhere
No AFCI
I plan to correct it all "very soon"

It's kinda like the cobblers kids have no shoes.
It's been said before. I work on other peoples electric all week and it's hard to wake up Sunday morning and work on my own.
I'm working on turning a walk-in closet into a master bathroom and right now have some "temporary" wiring in that area.
Other than that I need to upgrade some other things.
My home is completely code compliant for ther subsequent dates of install - 1933 most lighting, 1965 some kitchen modification, 1971 service, 1987 basement build -out, 2003 (When I bought it) sub-panel, garage, and range hood....
All other none compliant wiring hase been removed....

Let's see, knob and tube still in use, 14 guage wire to kitchen circuits, no outlet in the bathroom, no wall switches (pull chains and turn knobs on the lights) in most rooms.
I did put GFCI's where necessary. And I have a nice newer Homeline panel that I installed too.

How come no one mentioned replacing their outside receptacles/GFCI's with the weather resistant type.
I know that one is high on my list

As much as has changed in the last 3 updates, I think my home would need a new address to be '08 compliant.

Update to 2008? Heck, I have to demolish mine just to meet 2005. I wired it in 2000. I only have arks on the bedroom plugs. And I have to demolish it and start over because I have 3 or 4 cables going up thru top plates into an attic full of insulation. We are unable to sleep at all at night due to us all constantly worrying about not having de-rated those 3 in the hole cables. My wife has become a slobbering mess due to the stress of it. Would you want to spend even one minute is such a firetrap as a house with 3 or even 4 cables going up thru a top plate?

I'm feeding my hottub/pool panel with parallel #8's instead of 4 #4's.

My home, built about 1925.
Still some active K&T circuits.
GFCIs in kitchens and baths.
Been doing a service upgrade for many years now, I have two meter sockets on the house.
A few flying splices in the basement.
A copper water line is being used as an EGC for one old circuit.
Panel covers are on and stay that way.
The small detached garage has a 1.5" and 3/4" PVC running out there.....to bad I have yet to put wire in them:grin: .... I run an extension cord out.

AFCIs
TR recepts all around
One flying splice in the basement
Outside recepts are all GFI, but no WIU covers
100a feeder to garage, but not a single GFI in it.
The kitchen, bath, and laundry are all up to snuff and in pipe. We just added on this last year. I even got a permit.

Mine is 100% code compliant to code for 1989 build. I have no desire to change anything. Well, I did replace all backstabed recipticals I could get to. I could pull the devices off the wires by hand. No tools required.
None of you guys has mentioned installing a GFI on the washer within 6' of the the laundry tub. But judging from the age of most of these houses I suspect they don't have laundry tubs. How about you basement guys?

As I often say, being a professional means knowing how to break the rules properly. ;)
Added: To pass 2008 as new construction, the answers are obvious, and given several times already.
Specifically to my house, but was compliant when done, and might be addressed in the future:
1. Exterior receptacle (rear only) and bath receptacles on one 15a circuit.
2. Interconnected smokes (2) only in bedroom hallway.
3. No hall receptacle (but hall bath receptacle suffices).
As to what's wrong that I'm responsible for doing:
1. Hot-tub feed extended from range circuit, since switch to gas range, no separate EGC.
2. Receptacle above suspended ceiling for H/T projector.
3. Contactor inside H/T subpanel for switching power.
