Conductors next to Fuel Tanks

Can temporary back-up generator conductors, installed from the temporary generator to the Automatic Transfer Switch, be installed next to a large, outdoor fuel tank, used for the permanent back-up generator?

I don't believe there is an nec rule, however there may be another rule governing that situation. I don't believe the tank is considered combustible. Around here we cannot install electrical within 3 feet of the gas meter. So.... but that is a gas company rule.

seems like this would be a question for ahj. not sure. seems like a can of worms if you did, but a liability if you didn't.

also seems like the large outdoor fuel tank would be a class 1 div 2 area, but I don't have the slightest clue how things get classified or not.

I don't see where the NEC would prohibit such an installation. If the area where the conductors traversed happened to be classified you would have to deal with that issue, but its unlikely to be classified if it is a diesel fuel tank.

There may be other codes that may apply. And there may be some other issues if this is some kind of emergency generator, as opposed to a backup for some IT equipment.

Thank you for your responses. The emergency back-up generator cables were laid next to a large diesel fuel tank, located outside, for the permanent emergency generator, which is disabled and locked-out, until it can be replaced. Maybe I should consult with the local building code department about this. Or does anyone have suggestions.

Since electrical area classification is not an issue, you are still basically constrained by Section 590.2(A) to use Chapter 3 wiring methods as modified by Article 700 and, possibly, Section 590.4.
