I've been a part of this forum for a while, I have my selfish reasons, mostly I want to avoid all the hassle of LinkedIn. Can I ask which brand of White Goods you have a preference for and why?

If you have a job with troffers and strips and industrial hoods is there a brand you like? Dislike? Hate? If so, what about it makes you feel that way?

After working as a contractor for three years I have my own preferences, but what are you looking for out there? And is that thing more important than price at the end of the day? For instance, if you dislike Brand X but Brand X is cheaper/available will you still buy it?

I was going to wire these with a so/sj type cord, does this cord get sized based on the overcurrent device or can you reduce in size based on individual fixture load. I was reading thru some NEC 400 and not sure on the cord sizing.

Is it acceptable to wrap aircraft style cable around the opposing right angle pieces on the bottom of a red iron truss for a hanging high bay fixture support? It seems to me these sharp angles would weaken the cable and I am hesitant to apply this application. An eye bolt with fender washers would be secure and a far better application. Any convincing evidence would be appreciated.

I am bidding a job to replace existing church lighting. Ceilings are about 20 feet, all wood with big wood beams. Existing lights are 20 - cylinder type fixtures that can be adjusted like a spot light with one 500 watt osram bulb in each fixture. The church is about 100 foot wide by 75 feet. Half of the light boxes are against the walls but I could hang the other 10 lights down below the beams.
They are complaining about the maintenance of the existing fixtures and they do not put off enough light. The heat from the 500 watt bulbs is bleaching the wood ceiling. I don't really want the job so I will be bidding high. If anybody has a fixture web site I can check out or any ideals, it would help. Thanks

We manufacture outdoor light controls. We use the industry standard ANSI C136.10 twist-lock interface. Our product is listed 120-277VAC 1800VA. We have installations throughout North America, Europe and Australia without a single failure, except this one contactor which eats up our product, and it's a different issue every time.

So we went outand did some research. Here are our findings:
The lights are 480VAC single phase.
The contactor is a Square D series 8903 type SQH63 plus twist lock receptacle and lightning arrestor (form G101Y1532).
Contactor rating = 100A.
Load = 53 *400W = 21.2kVA /480 = 44A.
The contactor coil is 240VAC single phase.
Measuring from neutral to line at the twist-lock receptacle, we read 240VAC.
Measuring from neutral to control at the twist-lock receptacle, we read 0 VAC when the relay is open, and 240VAC when the relay is closed.
The load on the contactor coil is only pulling 0.095A = 22.8VA
But when we measure from hot to control at the receptacle with the relay closed, we measure 480VAC.

The city engineer seems to think it’s normal to measure 480VAC across the line and load at the receptacle and Square D seems to think something’s wired wrong.

We have plenty of other 240/480 installations on the same series contactor with zero problems to date. Just this one.

Can anyone tell me what’s going on here?

I have been doing forum search for rope lights, "rope lights", and rope + lights. I get every result containing the word "light," which is not much different than every result on lighting forum. Is there a way to narrow down search?

Although I'm sure situation has been discussed before, I'll put it here anyway:

Customer has rope lighting around top of kitchen cabinets, I did not bother with exact measure since I assumed I would be cutting off roll, +- 75'. Several sections have burned out, I recommended replacing entire rope, since the sections still working were the same age as the burnt out sections.

So while my focus was elsewhere, the bulk rolls of incandescent rope lights aren't UL approved (I know this is old news to active electricians).

What is my best next move? Thanks.
