what we do is run nm cable and protect it up to 8' or ceiling. whichever is greater. typically a 4 square box with an r/s cover and 3/4" PVC up. save the customer a couple bones and doesn't look as bad when you run the wires in a workperson-like manner

Thankfully in Mass we have this exception,.. Perhaps someday the NEC will adopt similar language
