Old wiring in attic and crawl space

There is no NEC requirement that abandonded wiring other than limited energy type of wiring (Phone, class 2 &3 etc..) be removed.

If you are talking about NM cable then, No but I have heard some inspectors make others terminate it in a JB. If it is not connected at either end then it has nothing to do with us. I do try and remove what I can but it is not necessary.

I only see the cables listed in sec 820.25 and 830.25 that would have to be removed or identified for future use. Could be a local rule.

For other sections for abandoned wiring from the 2008 also take a look at 640.6(C), 645.5(F), 725.25, 760.25, 770.25, 770.154, 800.25, 800.154.
