230 v motor

Is it a violation of the nec to start a 230v 2 hp sump pump motor with ol protection using just a h.d. 2 pole switch? When are starters required to be used for motors ? I look at 430 and can,t find the infomation i want. Thanks again for help.

If the motor has overload protection then no starter is needed.

I can't think of a violation. But I would use a manual motor starter.
