I am looking for a new way to hang boxes in a wood framed house when the layout doesn't end up on the joist. Something besides what I have always done, find a long enough 2X4, trim it up, nail it between the joists and attach the box. Anybody have any ideas? Would like to be able to have it support metal as well as plastic boxes.

when I clicked on the T&B pdf file under box supports, I saw several things I didn't even know they made. Good stuff for specialty apps.

I like the TSGB screw gun brackets for vanity lum outlet boxes. Also, to position MC stub-outs for under-cabinet lighting, I install the TSGB and drill a 1/2" hole in it.

For ceilings, I would use the beefier ones Karl links up to.

I use a 28 inch 1x4 screwed in a "T" to a 14 inch 2x4 about 3 inches from the end. They always fit and I can swap it around to fit the joist cavity. The nice part is that I can screw down instead of nailing the side. Sometimes I predrill holes in the ends for the anchor screws. Cost about $1.50 and they are light to drag across the attic.
