Grounding Subpanel

Can I legally ground a 3-wire subpanel by routing a ground wire from the main panel straight to the sub (shortest path between two points)?

The riddle is that the 3 wire is run in fashion A, B, C, D points inside the house...

Can't wait to hear about this one, thanks.

And I'll be getting toward 320 pretty soon.

And my Dad did this (ran a ground [as he calls it] as the crow flies; in this case as a mole digs if informed by the crow as to direction) on his barn,
...when he found he could not sink a ground rod in beach sand and get a return path.

Now my brother bought the place and is getting things straightened around, in this case, not so straight, but the grounded and grounding conductors will run with ungrounded.
