VFD Placement

It's my understanding that you're not supposed to install VFD's below overhead water pipes. Plausible location options are limited in the space I'm looking to put some VFDs - is there some sort of shield or cover for the drives that can be used so that it's acceptable to put them under pipes?

That's what I would do.
But, unless they are (expensive) indirect coolers, they would negate the NEMA 4 classification.
That was my point. Puting drives or any power dissipating kit in a sealed box is generally best avoided in my opinion. I have seen it end in tears more than once.
For the problem in the OP, a drip-proof canopy would be a simpler and cheaper option.
