We are quoting a job where our customer needs to have an explosion proof servo motor mounted on a portable fixture, wheel it into the classified area, and somehow connect it to a servo drive that is outside the hazardous location.

We've thought of two approaches. Using rated cable from a rated JB on the fixture to a rated plug (the problem seems to be finding a rated plug with 18 pins (4 16AWG, 9 24AWG, 4 18AWG) required for the encoder and motor leads). Or, running a rated cable outside of the area to a non rated plug (where the problem seems to be the sealing of the cable/opening after the plug has been passed outside and any other issues we haven't thought of !!).

Has anyone done anything similar ?? Are we out to lunch with idea 2 ?? The area currently has doors that can be opened and shut without precautions, so the idea of opening a pass thru and then closing it doesn't seem to be out of line. The room is where coatings and adhesives are applied to a backing before being fed out into an oven on a roller/conveyor system.

I would be inclined to put the servo drive on the fixture in a urged or XP box. Than all you need is power and you can do that with an XP outlet and plug.
