I was asked to hook up a generator as a back up for a customer.
The generator is rated 7000 w with a L14-30 for a 220v plug.

I take i have to go by the plug, and install a double pole 30 amp. breaker at the panel.

One more thing i need to use 240 v on my calculation instead 120, right?.
7000/240= 29.1666.

There is more to it than that, you will have to provide a means to prevent the inadvertent interconnection of normal and alternate sources of supply, this could be a transfer switch or an interlock kit, see 702.6

i wanted to make sure the right calculation was 7000w/240v.

As Chris stated, the generator will have the information on this, they usually show max KW for 240 and 120 v loading.
