Twistlock receptacles

When wiring a twist lock receptacle such as a l650r does the wire size have to be good for 50 amps or can it be smalled if the load is smaller than 50amps.

In my opinion, the branch circuit (overcurrent device) would be the deciding factor. You could use a 50 amp twist lock on a circuit 50 amps or less.
You would need to assure the utilization equipment that was plugged in was properly protected.

Well, lamps aren't required to be supplied with #12 or 14 cords, so I guess the cord size needs to be sized for the load.

How about details?
