Light fixture Box

Ok so if I am putting up a new light in a sheet rock ceiling how does the box get installed/fastened if the beam/joist is not where you want the light? Doesn't the box have to attached to a beam/joist? Thanks

If the old work box is not rated for fixture support you would need to use a retrofit fan brace and box.

Can get at HD or Lowes. Make sure to get the screw type for existing cieling. They are around $15

carlon does make a non metallic round remodel box rated for fixtures up to 5 lbs for ceilings.

what type of light fixture are you planning to use?
i like putting 4" recessed cans with reflective baffles over counters, but alot of folks like the look of pendant lights hanging.
