When you have a large distance to span. You may have to zero out the ohm reading to compensate for the lead resistance.

add: Most leads are 2-3 ft long. You can get them 5-6 ft or more in length.

isnt it true that if u the longer leads u have so the more wrong reading a resistance will be there since it is in series with actual resitance?

Yes. That is why you zero out the ohm reading.

Add: When you zero out the meter, you touch the ends of the leads together and press the zero function button on the meter. This tells the meter to reduce all readings by the amount of the lead resistance. Without a zero function, you will have to manually subtract the lead resistance (obtained by touching the ends of the leads together).

Or if you need very accurate meadings and need long leadds you use a bridge circuit that cancels out the lead resistance.

A sometimes little known fact that Zero/REL can be used for other functions also. You can put your probes on a AC/DC voltage Press Zero/REL, the meter will zero out at the value and your measurement from then on will be +/- from that zero point.
