The requirement for coverage areas are found in the adopted building code.
If it was up to 72 only, they would want it everywhere, but you don't need that in most installations.

I have read NFPA72 alot but have not seen such a point. If anyone knows please let me know too.

Thanks Ron. By the way, th BS(British std) has specified it to be more than 800mm void above ceiling to have smoke detectors.
