Bonding Equipment Neutral and EGC at device

Is there anywhere in the code that allows a provision for using 1 wire as both a neutral and EGC? In other words if we have a device or piece of equipment that is 120V can we bond the casing of this equipment to the neutral terminal to bond the two and only use one wire? I konw this may not be good practice, but is it legal?

Reading that over, I can't help but wonder if someone will interpret 250.142(A)(1) as meaning a disconnect for servicing an air conditioner.

Good point. I don't know how often I have read that and not realized that such interpretation might happen. It'd difficult to write a rule.

Methinks it's because DC is mentioned in (B), Exc. 3, although it's spelled out.
