The photo eyes used to operate multivapor 100 watt and up lighting are becoming disfunctional after a days use is there a problem not using a contacter i am perplexed why they are being damaged.

Make sure the wattage rating of the photo control isn't being exceeded. Also verify correct voltage.

check rating of photo cell against the combined rating of connected load. What does Photo cell smell like, burnt toast?

Any multi vapor fixture has a very high starting surge -- you need to consider that. Go with a high amperage rated photo cell.

AJ, keep line-to-line voltage in mind if the fixtures are powered by more than 120v.

Are the photo eyes listed to be used on HID lighting?

I have seen photo eyes that are only designed to be used with incandescent lighting and not for use with HID lighting for the reasons that Charlietuna has pointed out.
