Hello all first time poster My question is on a 120/208 Y system is it possible to use a buck boost x-former to obtain 230 volts and still use the Y center tap for the 120 volt requirments of the circuit. We have a drier to hook up that requires 120/240.

You can, but it is a bit messy, and only one side has 120V to neutral the other is about 150V. So you would have to be careful about hooking it up or your 120V controls would have 150V across them. The autotransformer is 120/32, 1kva.

Maybe better to get a 208/240 transformer say, 7.5kva for a 30A dryer ckt, and ground the centertap of the 240V secondary.

It takes a bigger xfm than if you use an auto transformer, but a lot cleaner install.

Most dryers will work on 120/208v supplies, merely heating at about 75% the wattage as it would on 240v, but the thermostatic operation reduces the drying time difference a bit.

Check the label on the rear (or in the door) of dryer. Almost all dryers have only the heating element connected line-to-line, and everything else from one line to the neutral.
