Can the heat strip be locked out when on generator power using 2-pole mechanically held contactor inside AHU?
Configuration: 400A service w/(2) 200A panels...(1) 200A panel will be emergency power panel w/30KW generator.
Upon generator start up would like to lock out just the 10kw heat strips in (2) AHU's but need power to AHU for blower.
Any suggestions?

Is there an automatic transfer switch? Is it a permanent install? If not I would just take the side off unit and unplug one wire going to the heaters when I manually applied gen to system. But to answer your question, I dont see anyreason why a contactor would not work but your going to have to fiqure out a way to let the contactor know when the gen is installed/running. You could do this with an aux contact on ats.

Simplest is to use aux contacts on genny to interrupt the 24v control transformer in the air-handler. You can disable the AC compressor the same way.

A bypass can be added for manual reset after shedding other loads if heat or AC are required.
