Added protection from corrosion.

Chris

not buying that. I have worked around these boat houses for years. Never have seen any corrosion where the wires are striped to attach to the devices. Most of the boat houses on this lake are wired in romex buy the way. Like a lot of lake properties there are a lot of hacks and homeowners working.

Here is a quote from the 2008 NEC Handbook.

The provisions of 555.15(B) require an insulated equipment grounding conductor that ensures a high-integrity path for ground-fault current. Because of the corrosive conditions in marinas and boatyards, metal raceways are not permitted to serve as the sole equipment grounding conductor.

"Private, noncommercial docking facilities constructed
or occupied for the use of the owner or residents of the
associated single-family dwelling are not covered by this
article."

555.1 Scope. This article covers the installation of wiring
and equipment in the areas comprising fixed or floating
piers, wharves, docks, and other areas in marinas, boatyards,
boat basins, boathouses, yacht clubs, boat condominiums,
docking facilities associated with residential condominiums,
any multiple docking facility, or similar
occupancies, and facilities that are used, or intended for use,
for the purpose of repair, berthing, launching, storage, or fueling
of small craft and the moorage of floating buildings.
Private, noncommercial docking facilities constructed
or occupied for the use of the owner or residents of the
associated single-family dwelling are not covered by this
article.

there is an exception for dwellings, its allowed..

It's not really an exception.

Under 555.1 scope it states "Private, noncommercial docking facilities constructed or occupied for the use of the owner or residents of the associated single family dwellings are not covered by this article."

So boat docks only associated with a single family dwelling are not covered by Article 555.

I never understood why they first say 555.13(A)(1) Wiring methods of Chapter 3 shall be permitted where identified for use in wet locations. which would seem that UF would be compliant, then hit you in 555.15(B)

UF with a green insulated ground is available for this purpose, but is hard to find and in most cases has to be special ordered, but for under docks you can use 555.13(a)(2) and change over to PVC and thwn conductors above the docks. but it will add cost.
