I have seen compact copper in 350 mcm 15 KV cable, but never in standard THHN. But I'm sure it's out there.

Table 5A in the back of the NEC includes copper but it looks like it was added in the 2008 edition

are compact conductors made ONLY to help with pipe fill, or are their other reasons as well?

In aluminum is a help to fit inside the lugs!!

Ahh, yeah. Didnt really think about that. I dont normally work with AL bigger than 4/0, and most of the lugs on the equipment I use are rated for up to 250Kcmil or so. Due to a code change, im sure more 250 Kcmil will be used instead of 4/0, but as of now, we are still on 2005

I've never seen a lug rated for standard max. cmil/compact max. cmil.
There are also compressed conductors.
