You can use anything that is rated for 15 amps and higher. #12 is fine and often used for the home runs on long runs to help with voltage drop. Problem is you might get an inspector that does not know this. We have had threads before over that issue.

Don't forget to upsize the EGC proportionately.
I think that's automatically done with 12/2 w/g.
