i agree with the guy who said that some Dope has copied it into his specs for the last 30 years.... and also with the above post from gardiner, that maybe then they did not have stranded specific terminals on recepts etc.

i hate solid wire of any size, except when i have to put it under a screw! then stranded blows, (as we all know)

I once worked for a contractor who would only buy solid #10 or #12 unless it was spec to use stranded. Rumor was that solid was 3% cheaper than stranded. That hardly makes up for the 10% more labor it takes to pull it from box to box in 3 1/2" deep two gang masonry boxes, in and out the bottom. I also second the idea that it has always been in the specs. I worked on a hospital that still required us to use the old red, yellow & blue, soft scotch lock wire nuts, just because it is still in the specs.
