Rules For Breaker Box Location

For a residential dwelling re-model I would like to move the location of the main electrical box (breaker box) from its current location which is in an astheticly poor location to a utility room which includes a cloths washer, dryer, and a deep freezer. What rules apply to the location of a breaker box. Does it need to be seperated from the Clothes washer by distance or a closet of its own? Can it be located directly above the washer?

numerous. some are NEC 110.26, 408.36 and 240.24

not normally, see 110.26

Can it be located directly above the washer?

No. See 110.26

VI. Service Equipment ? Disconnecting Means
230.70 General.
Means shall be provided to disconnect all conductors in a building or other structure from the service-entrance conductors.
(A) Location. The service disconnecting means shall be installed in accordance with 230.70(A)(1), (A)(2), and (A)(3).
(1) Readily Accessible Location. The service disconnecting means shall be installed at a readily accessible location either outside of a building or structure or inside nearest the point of entrance of the service conductors.
