Can Direct burial cable be run in a raceway?

I have been asked the question by a mechanical engineer:

Can you run direct burial cable in conduit?

My immediate response was going to be: I do not see why not,
but then i second guessed myself.

The wire is type XLPE USE and it would be run in schedule 80.

So can any one help me out?

Do a wire have to be listed for conduit use or is that inherent to running wire?

If not rated for indoor use the raceway must stay outside.

340 type UF cable
Look at 340.10(4) Installed as nonmetallic-sheathed cable .Where so installed, the installation and conductor requirments shall coply with Parts II and III of Article 334 and shall be of the multicondutor type.

If, its just a stub up under a foundation, you can encase it in 2" of concrete. Thus, keeping it "outside." We had a strip mall fed with URD in Sch 80 PVC. Inspector failed it, as he should. Encasement was cheap, replacing the runs was not. Of course that doesnt address the cable actually exposed in the panel but....

Or use dual/triple rated cable. http://www.awcwire.com/ProductSpec.aspx?id=XLPE-Power-Cable-UL-RHH-RHW-2-USE-2

The jacket has to flame retardant.
