Why are parallel conductors utilized? Does it have to do with amperage?

For me it's usually all about costs.

One example would be for certain (not all) 400 amp services which are drawn with one set of (4) #500 KCMIL Copper in 4" EMT. You could substitute the one set with two sets of (4) #3/0 KCMIL Copper and reduce your material costs by nearly 1/3.

Not to mention ease of installation and termination
