George is 100% right. You need to go to the Fire code or call your local fire sub code official as in NJ or fire marshall in other jurisdictions. The NEC does not tell us when or where they are required thats up to the fire inspector for placement and testing, however it is the electrical contractor or electricians responsibility on how to properly install the detector technically an outlet (point of consumption) if it falls under any article in the NEC. An example is if your using 120 Volt detectors, then yes rules apply by NEC, more important than that you need to clarify the hazardous location, there are Classes and Divisions and each have different wiring methods, Class III being least strict. Even a low voltage supervised or plain battery in a Class I Division I can blow something up so be very very careful on how you go about installing the detector. There are ways to sense flammable particles via duct sensors which are the normal way of doing it, please dont take this lightly by any means, do your homework. Anyone in this forum can help you and they are a good smart bunch ! we dont mind. Hope this helps and good luck.
