Existing residential construction to be completely rewired in NM. Total of 3 floors above basement. Allentown, PA row home.

My question is that there are two what look to have been forced air ducts going from basement all the way to 3rd floor that would make excellent chases to run romex in to get between floors preventing to have to cut as many holes in walls. The ducts are not connected to anything (in basement) and have been sealed over at the old exit points to rooms on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floor. Heat is currently via radiators so no worries about these ducts being needed. Are there prohibitions to using these as chases? I plan to double check with local inspector about this on Monday unless ya'll know of reason not to use these ducts as chases.

To add: I wish all houses had similar chases. If I ever build a multi-story house, I plan on making a laddered utility chase large enough for me to climb through.
