Arc flash and PPE use

The many questions and scenarios are flowing at me fast. New question -It is our practice to open the disconnect to our stations (water lift stations) to test for power when the station reports a power outage. The test is on the Edison side of the disconnect.

What is the required PPE for this testing (<600vac)? A majority of these instances are during rain storms.

When it is dark, how are we to see our volt meter reading if we are required to wear a dark shield?

For almost every situation in which you expect the utility protective devices to clear a fault, the available incident energy will almost always be >40cal/cm?. This fact of life is not blatantly mentioned in the task tables of NFPA70E.

Have you considered proximity type voltage detectors on the end of a 'hot stick'?

non contact voltage detectors

non contact voltage detectors

I ran across a non contact voltage detector to be installed on the cover of a mcc bucket. It could also be used for safety switches.
Manufactured by Grace Engineering in Davenport Iowa. Use a hand held voltage detector that lights up, or add in a clip on LED light to clip onto the hard hat. Hands free lighting.
