Usually I put them 10 to 11 feet back and just off center. Remember the door is 7 foot but the track and motor go back a bit further. Never had a problem-- The cords also seem to be on the right facing the garage door from inside so go off center to the right.

im having memory trouble...:ashamed:
i have 7 foot doors, how far back should the outlets be ? 9ft?
thanks

I usually go 10ft and it is not behind the operator. Also if low ceiling avoid centering it on door go about 18 inches off center, this also keeps it from being behind the operator. They usually have at least 4-6 feet of cord.

I had the same issue recently, brain fad, got the outlet right over the motor. "priceless" one smart box and 2 foot of NM and I was back on track.
