a person has a gas fired pool heater.i haven't looked at it yet,but am i correct in thinking that if it's not hard wired it can have a cord not longer than 3 feet long with an egc at least 12 awg.does cord have to be hard usage and can they plug 3' cord in extention cord if 3' cord can't reach existing gfi outlet?i usually hard wire my pool equip.

Why would you want to do that ? If you put a 3' cord and they add a 3' cord does that make sense. It defeats the purpose for 680.7. Why don't you just put a longer cord on it, it would be safer.

I can't seem to remember exactly but I think most do not need any electric or they are direct wired. Think of a gas water heater for a home-- no wiring needed. However, the casing must be bonded.
