sump pump in unfinished basement

can i use a single recepticle for a sump pump in an unfinished basement
or must i use a gfi?

Under the 2008 or 2011 NEC you must use a GFCI assuming it is a 120 volt 15 or 20 amp circuit.

If you're in New Jersey the single receptacle without GFCI protection is permitted. As Bob mentioned the GFCI requirement is for 15 and 20 amp, 120 volt devices. You could go to a 240 volt pump and use a non GFCI-single receptacle also.
