If I have a 7500watt generator and i want to back feed with an interlock kit the wire should be rated for 40amps with a 40 amp breaker?

I'm assuming that you want to do this with a inlet box, back-fed breaker, interlock and cord set? What size receptacle is on the generator? Many of the ones that I've seen in that size range have an L14-30R device which would be 30 amps.

Show us the link for the generator you purchased. Infinity is correct. To date I haven't seen a 7500W portable with a 50 amp receptacle on it.

You could use a 40 amp breaker with the interlock. As said the gen. will only have a 14-30R and it should be protected by a 30 amp breaker on the gen. set. So what ever you use in the panel would just be a disconnect.
