What does the code say about splicing a bare ground wire like 4/0 underground? Does it either have to be crimped or cad welded? When are you supposed to cadweld?

code isn't happy about splices. Main bonding, system bonding, and equipment bonding jumpers are to be unspliced. you can splice a GEC.

Is this wire a gec , egc or bonding jumper. If it is the GEC you must do an irreversible splice. The equipotential bond for a swimming pool can be split bolted together with bolts approved for underground. Other then the GEC I don't know of an issue with it assuming copper.

Its part of a halo going around a building and its jumping off that and going to four lightning rod poles placed in each corner of the building premises.

I would say since this is a lightning protection system the NEC would not directly apply, but NFPA 780 will, Taps are allowed but there are requirements in 780 that would have to be adhered too.

If you are not UL certified to do lightning protection systems then you can be opening yourself up to a whole bunch of liability issues, and some that might not be covered under you liability insurance policy.

Many try to get into this work without checking what it takes.
