sub feed wire size

Can #2AL/SER cable be used as a 100 amp subfeed from the main service panel to a sub panel located in another part of a single family dwelling? The service comes into an attached garage and then feeds to a sub located in the house basement.I thought in this scenario you would have to upsize to #1AL in order to get the 100A rating. Thanks

Depends somewhat on the Code cycle adopted and the details of the installation, but, in general, interior installations of SE cable are limited to the 60 deg rating, or in the case of #2, 75 amps. #1 would only be 85 amps.
If your install is one that allows the 75 deg rating, #2 would be limited to 90 amps.

I get the sense that the OP may be referring to Table 310.15(B)(7). If so, this does not apply to a feeder that does not carry the entire load of the dwelling and Augies comments would apply.
