got hit with a violation from a trough to a panel nipple was 26"

as per chapter 9 table 1 #4 max nipple 24" cant find any other reference to max size of nipple.

A nipple is 24" or less and allowed fill is 60% and no derating required. If you are longer than 24" stand fill values and derating applies. Someone else will have to quote the exact code as I don't have a code book handy at the moment.

so at 26" it becomes a short conduit run and all the provisions of conduit fill and derating come into effect.
and of course since its more then 18" it must be supported.

Yes, it becomes a conduit run beyond 24". But in your case, it seems a little petty to me to flag you for this since you are so close. But them's the rules I guess.

Derating might not matter if you can comply with 310.15(A)(2)Ex.
