I am hooking up a well for a customer and it has 12 awg coming out of the well head. I thought for some reason that wells had to be on a 30 amp minimum circuit. Am I wrong?

You need to know more info.
HP?
Voltage?
Phase?
Cap start from a control box above ground or onboard the pump?
Control via pilot duty or direct?
Gather info and apply Art. 430 requirements. There is no such thing as standard or required amperage.

Something I never understood is why the circuit rating was based on the overcurrent protective device and not the wire size as well. (210.3) Certainly the ground fault and short circuit rating is based on the overcurrent protective device but I think the wire would rate the circuit as well.
