Under some conditions, you might actually get better starting performance by letting the fully charged extra battery transfer some charge to the dead battery
Connecting a low impedance voltage source to a low impedance load, an uncharged battery, would result is rather large currents. That could account for the melted terminals.

Reminds me of this guy, who shall remain nameless:), who put an uncapped 9V battery in his pocket with his car keys.

Fortunately no permanent damage was sustained.:D

Well I'm sure that it was not keys because I carry....err uhmm I mean this guy carries his keys on a clip that hooks on his belt loop.

No, actually, it was a handful of quarters. I just asked and confirmed :) He described the sensation thus:

"I'm too old (and too young...) to be peeing myself, and it was a dry heat - very alarming."
